For years I have enjoyed building various things from scratch with wood. I call them my pieces. They begin as sketches, become detailed drawings, and then turn into beautiful things to be enjoyed for years. They tend to be folky and functional, beautifully imperfect things. I like to say they have a "farmhouse quality" to them. I say this because they tend to be made with the same simplicity and "primitive" quality as pieces built by country folks that would have made due with whatever was available to them around the farm. However, I use modern tools and materials and make a great effort to elevate them to a far more polished and finished level than their antique ancestors. Here is a little pie safe based on an antique one one given to me by my grandmother. I built this one in January of 2011. It's made of pine, has a whitewash stain, little clear glass flower knobs and brass hinges.

The Cabin Birdhouses
Made from American pine, stained, polyurethaned and topped with a sheet metal roof, they are made to last. The chimneys are made of wood and little stones and pebbles I got out of our yard. They have the old school look with nail perches. They are are vented, have drainage and are cleanable with a little hinged door in the rear. In other words, they're made with all the recommended specs to make your bird visitors very comfy.
